Project - Roof Repair

July 7th, 2008

Well I didn’t expect to be writing about this project. I was minding my own business driving back down from the Poconos in a rain storm when my son called me to inform me that they had to set out some pots and towels to catch the water leaking around the skylight in the kitchen.

The forecast was calling for rain all week so I needed to buy some supplies and repair the roof tonight when I got home. I like to save money and buy my tools online at Tools For The Handyman, but time was an issue and besides the total bill was under $20. I bought a gallon of Henry 208R Rubber Modified Wet Patch and a new trowel. If you been reading my blog you know I have this rule; every new project I get to buy a new tool. Now, a new trowel is not very exciting but it for filled the rule of one new tool per project.

I climbed up on the roof, supplies in hand, and discovered that the previous owners (I just bought this house last Oct) had patched the skylight before. I found several splits in the patch that could have caused the leak.

I cleaned the area and applied a four inch wide patch allĀ  around the skylight just to make sure I didn’t need to re due it again later. I still have seven or eight years left for this roof before I’ll need to replace it so I’m hoping the patch will hold up till then.

Till next project…
